Embracing a Community with San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas

This week on the Rebuild SoCal Podcast, we were joined by San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas. Chairwoman Vargas is a first-generation immigrant and the first Latina, binational, and woman of color to be elected as a County Supervisor. A member of the board since 2021, Chairwoman Vargas embarked on her role as Chairwoman in January of this year.

Inspired by her parent’s dedication to their community, Chairwoman Vargas has always been passionate about serving others. She began her career as a community organizer, spending several decades of her life advocating for her neighbors and acting on several organizational and private executive boards, eventually becoming a County Supervisor. “I never imagined how wonderful this role was going to be,” Chairwoman Vargas says. Chairwoman Vargas shared that she has come to see that she can really make a difference in peoples’ everyday lives every day.

Chairwoman Vargas recognizes that her unique upbringing, regularly traveling across the California-Mexico border to spend time with both her Californian and Tijuanan family members, shaped her to succeed in this role. Being raised in two different cultural environments, learning English as a second language, and having exposure to global awareness has empowered Chairwoman Vargas to develop a growth mindset and to deploy that means of thinking within her everyday decision-making.

Chairwoman Vargas’ dedication to making government accessible to all and to serve each member of her community, no matter who they are, is just one of the many reasons she was elected unanimously to take on this role.
