Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) multi-billion-dollar modernization program promises to deliver a world-class experience for travelers and transform public transportation in and around the airport. Now that ground has been broken, skilled labor needs to get working. To train those interested in a rewarding career in construction, the HireLAX Apprenticeship Readiness Program has been graduating classes in a journey toward support of LAX’s capital-improvement program.

Modernizing one of the country’s busiest airports to make it more efficient will impact all of Southern California. In fact, the effects can be felt today. An economic study reported that the capital-improvement program creates an additional 121,640 annual jobs with labor income of $7.6 billion and economic output of $20.3 billion, $966 million in state and local taxes, and $1.6 billion in federal tax revenues.

LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS), selected by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), is required to meet the goals of a labor agreement and hire locally.
The HireLAX Program provides local residents access to enroll in a comprehensive, construction apprenticeship preparation program offered by select public agencies or community partners. Upon completion, program graduates are competitively positioned for placement consideration on a LAWA construction project through its contractors and local craft unions. Of the first three cohorts combined, more than 70% have started their construction careers as union apprentices at LAX or other nearby projects. In March, the 4th cohort graduated another 31 students and there is recruitment for additional classes.

“Never before has the need for a skilled workforce been more apparent than the explosion of construction opportunities in the Southern California market.” John Hakel, Executive Director, Southern California Partnership For Jobs. “The ‘HireLAX’ program works in tandem with local construction Unions to provide top quality candidates for placement consideration. This is a win-win for the construction industry.”
